Although Florence Knoll studied with Mies van der Rohe and Saarinen, she became best known for the furniture and design company that she and her husband created that produced some of the most iconic pieces of 20th-century design—resulting in Knoll being awarded the National Medal of the Arts. In 2008, the Smithsonian Archives of American Art digitized her archives in their entirety, including sketches and correspondence from luminaries like Charles and Ray Eames and Harry Bertoia.
